Leagate Council has announced detailed plans to renovate Leagate Park, focusing on improved accessibility, enhanced green spaces and new recreational facilities. The project addresses community feedback on outdated equipment and uneven pathways that have limited use for families and older residents.

Key Renovation Features

The renovation will include replacement of the main playground with modern, inclusive equipment designed for children with varying abilities. New rubberised surfacing will replace existing bark chips to reduce maintenance and improve safety. Additional walking paths will be widened and lit with energy-efficient LED lamps to encourage evening use. A community orchard and sensory garden are also planned, along with upgraded benches, picnic areas and a small outdoor fitness zone for adults.

Drainage improvements will tackle seasonal flooding in the lower field, while tree planting will increase canopy cover and support local biodiversity. The council has confirmed that existing mature trees will be protected during works. Parking provision near the main entrance will be expanded slightly, with new cycle racks added to promote sustainable travel.

Project Timeline and Budget

Works are scheduled to begin in spring next year and complete in two phases over 18 months. Phase one covers the playground and paths, while phase two addresses landscaping and the fitness area. Total estimated cost stands at £1.2 million, funded through a combination of council reserves, section 106 contributions from nearby developments and a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Public consultation sessions will run throughout the autumn, allowing residents to review designs and suggest minor adjustments. The council has stated that feedback will be incorporated where feasible before final tendering. Regular updates will be published on the council website, and a dedicated project officer will coordinate with local schools and community groups to minimise disruption during construction.

Officials emphasised that the park will remain open during most of the works, with only targeted areas cordoned off as needed. Once complete, the renovated space is expected to increase visitor numbers and provide a more welcoming environment for Leagate residents.
